Blind Cave Tetra (Astyanax mexicanus)

Get ready to be absolutely amazed by the Blind Cave Tetra! One of nature's most incredible aquatic specialists, these fascinating fish are technically a subspecies of the Mexican Tetra, but they've totally stolen the spotlight and become aquarium superstars in their own right.

These remarkable little guys are perfectly adapted to thrive in isolated cave environments where resources are scarce and competition is fierce. You could probably guess from the name that they're blind, but with all that swimming around in total darkness they took it a step further than most. There are tons of animals, fish included, that have decided that vision just doesn't fit their vibe but not many decide the whole concept of eyes is overrated! Instead, these specialists ramped up their nervous system for an extra powerful sense of touch. They're able to navigate their environment by sensing pressure differences in the water to find food and avoid obstacles.

However, while these guys can't stare into the abyss, they are fearless and tough nonetheless. They're a hardy species that's great for viewing at inconsistent hours without being disturbed by what's going on outside of the tank. They don't have a "sleep cycle" like normal fish and many times you can look in on them in the middle of the night, and they'd be behaving the exact same as any other time! They're a schooling fish that's regularly in search of a meal so there's plenty of movement to catch your eyes, but as they're opportunistic cave dwellers that can't afford to miss a chance at a snack they can get a bit nippy as they get older and bigger so you'll have to keep that in mind if you want to pair them with other species. Even on their own it's absolutely fascinating to watch them in action.
